Clean water is widely available in many developed countries. This daily necessity, however, is a luxury for the community named Phum Tong Kheav at Oudong, Cambodia. Naturally, Cambodia has many great sources of water such as Mekong River and Tonle Sap. Unfortunately, many villagers in rural areas are unable to access to the clean water for daily activities such as drinking, cooking and bathing.
Image 1: The only available water tank shared by all the villagers.
The villagers have to walk up to 1km and spend 5000 Riel ($1.25) in order to get only a barrel of water.
Image 2: The paths make the villagers' journey to get the water even more difficult.
Thus, the students from Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) of Royal University of Phnom Pehn (RUPP) is organising a community project to renovate the well for Phum Tong Kheav community. By having the well, the poor villagers are able to access to the water continuously. It will help them to reduce the daily expense on purchasing water. Moreover, they are also able to prevent diseases such as malaria or measles caused by the contaminated water or food.
Image 3: The management of the hygiene needs more attention to prevent infectious diseases spread by contaminated water and food.
In January 2019, we had invited a well-driller to estimate the costs of the renovation. When we have sufficient funding, the trusted well-driller and his team will renovate the well in June. Furthermore, the team will also ensure one-year maintenance. In order to carry out the project, we need some expenses for renovation. Thus, we are humbly seeking financial support from both Malaysians and Cambodians.
The following table is the budget of our project:
No. | Item | Unit | Cost per Unit (RM) | Total Price (RM) |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Well's Renovation | 1 | 3100 | 3100 |
2 | Maintenance Service | 1 Year | 520 | 520 |
3 | Transportation | 3 Times | 80 | 320 |
4 | Telephone Expense | 60 | 60 | |
5 | Miscellaneous | 130 | 130 | |
Grand Total | 4130 |
To ensure the success of the project, we try various ways for fundraising. Apart from using mystartr.com platform, we had conducted a fundraising through selling food and beverages on IFL Cultural Day 2019 (09 April 2019).

Moreover, we have also gotten the consent from our university to seek potential sponsors in Cambodia to collaborate with us in carrying out this meaningful project. Nonetheless, mystartr.com remains as our greatest hope for the fundraising as it is more accessible to the people and trustable.
To ensure the sustainbility of the project, we will also educate the local people to maintain the well for a long-term usage. Lastly, we also wish to raise the awareness among the Malaysians and Cambodians regarding the importance of clean water through this project.
There are five local students from Phnom Penh, Cambodia and one exchange student from Malaysia collabotate to implement this project.
